Bela Szepessy Violin, London, 1894
A lovely violin based on a Stradivari model and featuring a one-piece, slab-cut, beautifully figured maple back with similar sides and head. The top plate, also of one-piece, is of straight grained spruce with fine reed lines at the treble flank, growing a little wider towards the bass side, the varnish of a warm brown over a light gold ground.
Szepessy was born in Budapest and trained there under Samuel Nemessanyi. He also worked in Vienna before making his way to London in the early 1880’s where he spent the rest of his productive life. One of the finest makers of his time, he closely followed the classical models of the great Italian masters whilst introducing his own unique characteristics to the mix. A wonderful piece of violin making history.
This violin has been played professionally for many years, it has a rich well balanced sound and good projection. It is in fabulous condition and is currently set-up to a professional level with Evah Pirazzi strings. It would be suitable for the advanced student or young/advancing professional player.
